Comment
This is the first type of 'larin' coin, minted in the city of Lar. Lar had been an independent kingdom, and although its rulers submitted to the Safavid Shah Isma'il I early in his reign, they maintained a large degree of autonomy. This coin, which is the ancestor of the later, more elegant 'hairpin' larins, was designed for trade with the Safavids and, more importantly, with the Portuguese on their new territory in Hormuz. The crudeness of the design points to a local Lari imitation of the 'millsail' shahis.Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during the reign of Ismail I, who was the founder of the Safavid dynasty in Iran. He was known for his military conquests and his efforts to establish Shia Islam as the official religion of Iran, which had a significant impact on the country's history and culture.
