Comment

Half-Esterlin, very rare, struck around 1346 at the Marche mint.

Top of imitations struck under John the Blind, this half-esterlin imitates not only both sides but also the legend of Spink# 1557.

Obverse:
  • half esterlin L# 96-1: + EDWRDENSIS REX
  • ½ penny Spink# 1557: + EDWARDVS REX

Reverse: identical: CIVI TAS LON DON

The reverse is identical to (link below)

32 pieces listed by Weiller all come, like type L#95, of the treasure B.199 discovered in 1868 in York. This type is much heavier than the L#95.

Interesting fact

The Half Esterlin coin was minted during the reign of Jean the Blind, who was the Count of Luxembourg from 1309 to 1346. Despite being blind, Jean the Blind was known for his military prowess and strategic thinking, leading his army to several victories during his reign. The coin's design, which features a portrait of Jean the Blind, is a testament to his leadership and legacy.
