Comment
There is disagreement among experts whether this coin should be attributed to Hainaut or Holland. The arms obverse are said to be Bavaria-Hainaut by Delmonte and Chalon, but others feel the rose at center of the cross reverse is the Dordrecht mint mark.Regardless, the coin is believed to have been used in both places where William ruled as Count.
We follow Delmonte and place it in Hainaut.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Gold Haie coin is that it was minted during a time of great turmoil in Europe, particularly in the County of Hainaut, which was part of the French States. The coin was issued by William IV, who was the Count of Hainaut from 1404 to 1407. During his reign, the county faced many challenges, including political instability, economic struggles, and military conflicts. Despite these challenges, the Gold Haie coin remains a valuable and sought-after collector's item, a testament to the enduring legacy of the County of Hainaut and its rich history.
