Comment
The reverse legend is a biblical verse from Wisdom (1:1)
The "Gold Fleece" (Gouden Vlies or Toison d'Or) was authorized by Philip in 1496, and was to have double the value of a guilder (goudgulden or florin d'or), and fineness equal to that of the English Noble. In Brabant, they were only struck from 1499-1506.
Based on the frequency of appearance in public sales, very few examples have survived.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Gold Fleece coin is that it was minted during the reign of Philip the Handsome, who was the first Habsburg king of Castile and Aragon, and later became the first king of Spain. The coin's design features a fleece, which is a symbol of the Golden Fleece, a legendary object from Greek mythology that was said to have the power to heal any wound and grant eternal youth. The inclusion of this symbol on the coin may have been meant to convey the idea of the king's power and wisdom.
