Comment
Mary was the wife of Duke Reginald III of Guelders, whose death in 1371 triggered the War of the Guelders Succession, which pitted two of his half-sisters against each other, eventually ending in 1379 in favor of Maria and William of Julich.
Meanwhile, Mary of Brabant was striking coins in her name, and presumptive titles, at the castle of Oyen.
Interesting fact
The Gold Ecu - Mary of Brabant (Oyen) ND (1361-1399) from Duchy of Guelders (Dutch States) is an interesting coin because it was issued during a time of great turmoil in Europe, particularly in the Low Countries. The coin was minted during the reign of Mary of Brabant, who was the daughter of Duke John III of Brabant and the wife of Duke Albert I of Bavaria. This coin was used as a means of payment and exchange during a time of political and economic upheaval, as the Low Countries were struggling to maintain their independence from the powerful neighboring kingdoms of England and France. Despite the challenges of the time, the Gold Ecu remained a popular and trusted form of currency, and it continues to be a valuable collector's item for numismatists today.
