Shields of Arnhem and Gelderland inside a polylobe

Script: Latin

Lettering: ✠ BENEDICT : QVI : VENIT : IN : NOMINE

Translation: Blessed who comes in the name

Comment

Called Rijns(ch)e goudgulden or Arnhems(ch)e goudgulden in Dutch.

When Reinoud III died in 1371, he left no legitimate heir to the throne of he Duchy of Guelders, and the war of the Guelders Succession erupted.

This coin was issued in the name of his widow, Marie of Brabant, but bears the image of the enthroned late duke.

Note!
The VdChijs catalog seems to make a mistake on page 50, where they begin describing the coins of Maria. The text begins with the description of the silver coins on Plate VI, but does not describe Plate VI, number 1.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1 Gulden - Marie of Brabant ND (1361-1399) coin is that it features a unique design element - a small shield with the coat of arms of the Duchy of Guelders, which was a region in the Low Countries that is now part of the Netherlands. This shield is located on the reverse side of the coin, beneath the image of Marie of Brabant. This design element sets the coin apart from other coins of the time and adds to its historical significance.
