Comment
"Under Louis VIII and during the first part of the reign of Louis IX, a single coin was minted, the denier tournois, the production of which was no longer reserved for Tours but was extended to several other mints, without it being possible to distinguish between the two reigns. These are the denarii with the legends
+ TVRONVS CIVI and + TVRONIS CIVI". (M.J. DUPLESSY, Les Monnaies françaises royales, tome I, 1988)
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Denier Tournois - Louis VIII / Louis IX (TVRONVS) ND (1223-1245) coin from France is that it was minted during a time of great change and upheaval in Europe. The coin was issued during the reign of Louis VIII, who became king of France in 1223 and reigned until his death in 1226. His son, Louis IX, succeeded him and ruled until his death in 1270. During their reigns, the kingdom of France was facing challenges from both within and outside its borders, including the Albigensian Crusade, a military campaign against the Cathars, a religious sect deemed heretical by the Catholic Church. Despite these challenges, the Denier Tournois coin remained a widely used and trusted form of currency throughout France and Europe.
