Comment

"Under Louis VIII and during the first part of the reign of Louis IX, a single coin was minted, the denier tournois, the manufacture of which was no longer reserved for Tours but was extended to several other mints, without it being possible to distinguish between the two reigns. These denarii bear the legends + TVRONVS CIVI and + TVRONIS CIVI".
Jean DUPLESSY (extract from "les monnaies françaises royales" tome I 1988).

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Denier Tournois - Louis VIII / Louis IX (TVRONIS) ND (1223-1245) coin from France is that it was made of Billon, a type of alloy that was commonly used in medieval Europe for coinage. Billon is a mixture of silver and other metals, typically copper, tin, or lead, and was used to create a coin that was more durable and less prone to wear and tear than pure silver coins. The use of Billon in coinage was a common practice during this time period, and this coin is a prime example of that.
