Comment
The Dardenne is a French coin produced following the edict of October 16, 1709, with a legal tender of 6 deniers tournois. The term "dardenne" comes from the fact that the sides were prepared at the Château de Dardenne, in the commune of Le Revest (Var), near Toulon, from the copper of old marine cannons reformed from Louis XIII's fleet.
The coin was minted in only 3 workshops: La Rochelle (340,000 pieces), Montpellier (8,218,832 pieces) and, above all, Aix-en-Provence (22,114,900 pieces). Due to a lack of raw materials, the planned quantity of coins - 80 million - was never achieved and, following subsequent recasts, the remaining quantity remains minimal. A mint planned for Bordeaux and Nantes was not carried out.
As is always the case with drafts, abuses were committed, as attested by a specimen in the Cabinet des Médailles weighing just 5.78 g, well below the permitted tolerance. Production stopped at Dardenne on April 30, 1712. (WIKIPÉDIA)
Interesting fact
The 6 Deniers "Dardenne" coin from France, minted during the reign of Louis XIV (1710-1712), features a unique design element - a small shield with the letters "D" and "F" (for "Dardenne" and "France") on either side of the coin's central axis. This distinctive feature sets it apart from other coins of the same denomination and time period.
