Comment

Coin commemorating the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Luxembourg by the American troops.

Two different variants were struck at the mint in Brussels:
  • Polished flan (BU, polished planchet, quality proof)

The piece on polished flan is recognizable with the acronym "qp" after the date on the reverse side, with its grooved edge and its diameter of 37.5 mm.

  • FDC:

The specimen in FDC does not have an abbreviation behind the vintage, its edge is smooth and its diameter slightly smaller (37 mm).

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Luxembourg's liberation from Nazi occupation during World War II. The coin features an image of Grand Duke Jean, who played a significant role in the country's liberation, on the obverse, and the Luxembourgish national motto "Mir wëlle bleiwe wat mir sinn" (We want to remain what we are) on the reverse. The coin's design serves as a symbol of Luxembourg's resilience and determination to maintain its independence and sovereignty.
