Comment
The 1987 series was initially manufactured to be part of the 1st Córdoba currency. Due to the 1988 redenomination and removal of 3 zeros, the 1987 series was introduced into the 2nd Córdoba currency. While these coins are dated 1987, they were not released into circulation until 1988 after the conversion was made.Due to high inflation caused by fiscal mismanagement in the 1980s, the Córdoba was again redenominated in 1990 at a rate of 1 Córdoba "Oro" = 5,000,000 "old" Córdobas.
Interesting fact
The 500 Córdobas coin from Nicaragua, made of Aluminium and weighing 1.9 grams, is interesting because it was produced during a time of economic turmoil in the country. In 1987, Nicaragua was facing hyperinflation, with prices increasing by as much as 30% per month. As a result, the government was forced to introduce a new currency, the Córdoba, to replace the old peso. The 500 Córdobas coin was one of the denominations introduced during this time, and it was used widely in everyday transactions. Despite the economic challenges, the coin remains a fascinating piece of numismatic history.
