The Pattern 50 Xu coin was designed by the South Vietnamese artist, Nguyễn Đức Thọ, who was also a prominent painter and sculptor. The coin features a unique blend of traditional Vietnamese design elements, such as the dragon and phoenix, with modernist influences. The obverse of the coin depicts a stylized portrait of President Ngô Đình Diệm, while the reverse features a representation of the country's agricultural richness, with rice stalks and a water buffalo.
