Date of issue: 18 OCT 1996In the beginning of the Russo-Japanese war the crew of the Russian cruiser Varyag, commanded by Capt. Vsevolod Rudnev, heroically fought (27.01-09.02.1904) against the Japanese squadron off Chemulpo (Korea). When the Russian sailors realised that their ship could be seized by the enemy, they scuttled it.
Interesting fact
The Cruiser "Varyag" coin, minted in 1996, was the first gold coin produced by the Russian Federation. It has a diameter of 22mm and a mintage of only 25,000 pieces, making it a rare and valuable collector's item.
