The design was originally released at the beginning of 2020 as part of the 2020 annual Silver Piedfort Proof set in anticipation of the games taking place in July 2020, however the Tokyo Olympics were postponed until 2021 due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. The coin was re-issued individually with colourised reverse in 2021 and an updated obverse date.
