The design was originally released at the beginning of 2020 as part of the 2020 annual BU and Proof sets in anticipation of the games taking place in July 2020, however the Tokyo Olympics were postponed until 2021 due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. The coin was re-issued individually in Brilliant Uncirculated with colourised reverse in 2021 with an updated obverse date. The design was also struck in copper-nickel, colourised silver proof, colourised silver piedfort and gold proof. Issue Limit: 12,021.
