Comment
This is the standard cupro-nickel circulation quality issue of the five penguin carollers, also available as a silver piedfort coin (mintage of 2000) and as a coloured 'diamond finish' numismatic product (mintage of 7,500). It is perhaps something of an anomaly that this standard version is the rarest of all, with an issue limit of just 950 , none of them were dispatched to the Falklands for circulation. The coin was only offered by Pobjoy Mint as one of five penguin theme coins sold together.Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Falkland Islands 50p coin featuring Elizabeth II (Penguin Carol-singers) is that it was issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the first Christmas carol service held in the Falkland Islands. The service was held on Christmas Day in 1817 and was attended by the crew of the HMS Acasta, a British ship that was stationed in the islands at the time. The coin's design features a group of penguins singing carols, which is a playful nod to the event that it is commemorating.
