Penguins are the most common birds in the Antarctic with some colonies having populations that are larger than some cities. They survive in exceptionally harsh conditions but the penguin is high evolved to be able to live in the coldest of places. To be able to withstand the endless hours standing on the ice, the blood flow to the penguin’s feet is tightly controlled, reducing the flow in the extremely cold environment. It is therefore no wonder that the Penguin is often recognised as the emblem of Antarctica.
