The featured Great Pagoda at Kew was built in 1762 as a gift for Princess Augusta. Issued to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, it was included as part of the 16-coin set (70 sales) to celebrate 40 years of the 50 pence denomination. This design was also struck in copper-nickel, silver proof, silver piedfort and gold piedfort.©The Royal Mint, 2009
The design was reused in 2019 although it featured Jody Clark's fifth portrait and was released as part of the 5-coin British Culture Sets celebrating 50 years of the 50p.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Kew Gardens 50p coin is that it is one of the rarest and most valuable coins in the UK, with only 210,000 minted. It was designed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, London, and features a unique design of a Kew Gardens' famous Chinese pagoda on the reverse side. Due to its low mintage and special design, it's highly sought after by collectors and can sell for thousands of pounds.
