Comment
Although the design was originally used in 2004 with Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait to commemorate Roger Bannister making sporting history on 6th May 1954 as the first athlete to run a mile in under 4 minutes, it wasn't until 2009 when a gold piedfort was issued in the 16-piece sets to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 50 pence denomination. The 2019 issue formed part of the 5-coin British Culture Set celebrating 50 years of the 50p and this design was also struck in copper-nickel, silver proof, silver piedfort and gold proof. Issue Limit: 50

Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the coin is that it commemorates the 65th anniversary of Sir Roger Bannister's historic four-minute mile, a feat that was once thought to be impossible. The coin's design features a stylized image of a runner breaking the tape, symbolizing Bannister's achievement and the spirit of innovation and pushing boundaries that it represents.
