First issued in 2004 with Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait to commemorate Roger Bannister making sporting history on 6th May 1954 as the first athlete to run a mile in under 4 minutes. The coin was re-issued in 2009 as part of the 16-piece set to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 50 pence denomination. The 2009 issue was also struck in silver proof, gold proof and gold piedfort. Issue limit: 5,000.

This 2019 issue features Jody Clark's fifth obverse portrait and forms part of the 5-coin British Culture Set celebrating 50 years of the 50p it was available in Proof sets as well as in a Brilliant Uncirculated Set (31,250 sales) and available to third parties as BU individually (53,435 sales). this design was also struck in silver proof, silver piedfort, gold proof and gold piedfort.
