Comment

Nine-year-old Florence Jackson, the designer of the Athletics 50p coin, is the first ever child to design a Royal Mint UK coin. She won this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in 2009 after taking part in a Blue Peter competition. The Coin Design Competition was one of the show’s most popular ever, with Florence’s design beating over 17,000 other entries.

This silver issue was only available in Brilliant Uncirculated and was part of the complete set of 29 coins to commemorate the London 2012 Olympic Games. It was also issued individually as well as being available in copper-nickel, gold proof and gold piedfort. Issue Limit: 30,000

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 50p coin is that it features a unique design that commemorates the 2012 London Olympics, with the reverse side depicting various athletics events in a stylized manner.
