Nine-year-old Florence Jackson, the designer of the Athletics 50p coin, is the first ever child to design a Royal Mint UK coin. She won this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in 2009 after taking part in a Blue Peter competition. The Coin Design Competition was one of the show’s most popular ever, with Florence’s design beating over 17,000 other entries.

The first issue of this type was struck by the Royal Mint with the date 2009 but was not released into general circulation, only being available in the special Blue Peter presentation pack. The original issue limit was set to 100,000 but due to low demand, the actual mintage figure was around 20% of this.

The coin was finally issued for circulation two years later with an obverse date of 2011 as part of the 29-piece set struck to commemorate the Summer Olympics, London 2012 as well as in a Brilliant Uncirculated pack (168, 498 sales), some were signed by British Athletes with an issue limit of 500 for each, as follows; Daley Thompson (490 sales), Kelly Holmes (485 sales), Sebastian Coe (376 sales), while also sold with the other 28 BU packs in a folder (25,759 sales), and a Gold Medal Winners set (2,012 issue limit, sales unknown) the coin was also struck in silver BU, gold proof and gold piedfort.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique reverse design depicting various athletes in motion, created by artist Neil Wolfson. This design was chosen to commemorate the 2012 London Olympics, which were held during the coin's circulation period.
