Due to problems with procuring coal during World War I, the board of directors of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) decided in 1916 to electrify the Gotthard ramps. A powerful electric locomotive with an articulated design with the greatest possible ability to negotiate curves was ordered for freight traffic. These specifications led in 1919 to the legendary "Crocodile" locomotive.© Swissmint
