"May 23, 1873 is the official birthdate of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)—that’s the day Parliament passed a bill allowing for the creation of a new police force, the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP), which became the RCMP in 1920.

The coin’s reverse re-creates two designs from the RCMP’s centennial year in 1973: a 25-cent coin and a commemorative silver dollar; both were designed by late RCMP Staff Sergeant Paul Cederberg. The image of a mounted officer also appears on the 1998 proof dollar designed by Adeline Halvorson in honour of the 125ᵗʰ anniversary of the RCMP (and the founding of the NWMP).

A different centennial inspired the 2020 Moments to Hold: Celebrating 100 Years of the RCMP as Canada’s National Police Force coin designed by Ago Aarand. In 1920, the Dominion Police and the Royal North-West Mounted Police (the “royal” title was conferred upon the NWMP in 1904) were combined to form one national police service, which was renamed the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Today, the RCMP’s mandate also includes federal, provincial and municipal policing responsibilities.

The 2010 1/25 oz. pure gold coin, designed by artist Janet Griffin-Scot, was a tribute rather than a commemoration. The issue of the 2013 O Canada: Royal Canadian Mounted Police coin, also designed by Janet Griffin-Scott, coincided with the RCMP’s 140ᵗʰ anniversary."
