The effigies of Queen Elizabeth II: a 5 oz retrospective of the Queen's greatest number of coinsQueen Elizabeth II holds the record for the longest reign in modern Canadian history, and also for the greatest number of portraits to appear on our coins. Always looking to the right, effigies of the Queen, each version embodying a different era of her reign, have graced the obverse of Canadian coins since 1953. All four are united on the reverse and obverse of this 5 oz. 99.99% pure silver coin in an elegant retrospective of Canadian numismatic portraits of "Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith".
Change in portraits: effigies of Queen Elizabeth II
This is the effigy of the young laurel by Mary Gillick that we find in our pockets during the early years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign, when Canada was laying the foundations of its reputation as a peacekeeper.
The second effigy, a portrait of the Queen wearing a tiara by Arnold Machin, was minted at the time of the adoption of the Canadian flag (1965), the country's centennial celebration (1967), and the arrival of Olympic athletes in Montreal (1976).
The majestic tiara effigy by Dora de Pédery-Hunt - the first to be signed by a Canadian artist - is that of a refined Queen, who grew and matured at the same pace as Canada, even as the country's map was redrawn in 1999 to include Nunavut.
Susanna Blunt's uncrowned portrait will be the Queen's last effigy. It is a more modern representation of The Queen who, in her own words, has "witnessed more than half of Canada's history since Confederation", and whose dedication and commitment to the country have never wavered.
Historic reminders of a monumental reign, these engraved portraits represent decades of change, both for Canada and for Queen Elizabeth II. Long was her reign.
Four historic effigies on both sides of this 5 oz. souvenir coin.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a double-shell case featuring the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a special illustrated commemorative protective box.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique tribute obverse design, which is a special commemoration of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. The design features a portrait of the Queen, surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves, which is a symbol of Canada. This design is different from the standard obverse design used on most Canadian coins, which features a portrait of the Queen with a crown and a shield. This special design makes the coin stand out and adds to its collectibility.
