The Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra in Sergiyev Posad, a town 70 kilometres north of Moscow - an ancient Russian monastery founded in the XIVth century by Sergi Radonezhsky, one of the most revered saints of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery is a masterpiece of XVth-XVIIth century Russian architecture and the gem of the so-called Golden Ring (a dozen ancient Russian towns around Moscow famous for their historical monuments). The Lavra houses, a theological academy, a seminary and a history and art museum are situated here.

Interesting fact

The Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra in Sergiyev Posad, depicted on the 1993 Russian 5 Rouble non-circulating coin, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important Orthodox monasteries in Russia.
