John Travers Cornwell, commonly known as Jack Cornwell, ‘Jutland Jack’ or Boy Cornwall, was a young sailor who died aged 16 during the Battle of Jutland for which he was awarded a Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest award for acts of outstanding bravery in battle. Jack was one of the youngest people to be awarded a Victoria Cross during the First World War.The third of six sets of £5 coins issued between 2014 and 2018, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War. This issue was part of the first 6-coin set released in 2018, remembering the Stories of The First World War and was also struck in gold proof.
