John Travers Cornwell, commonly known as Jack Cornwell, ‘Jutland Jack’ or Boy Cornwall, was a young sailor who died aged 16 during the Battle of Jutland for which he was awarded a Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest award for acts of outstanding bravery in battle. Jack was one of the youngest people to be awarded a Victoria Cross during the First World War.

The third of six sets of £5 coins issued between 2014 and 2018, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War. This issue was part of the first 6-coin set released in 2018, remembering the Stories of The First World War and was also struck in silver proof. Issue limit: 25.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the coin is that it features a portrait of Jack Cornwell VC, a British naval hero who was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valour in the face of the enemy, for his actions during the Battle of Jutland in World War I. The coin was issued to commemorate the centenary of Cornwell's award and is a rare and valuable collector's item.
