Comment
Despite being produced in their millions and being available at face value from most post offices and banks, the ordinary business strike was a Royal Mint commemorative issue and not intended for general circulation. This design was issued in Brilliant Uncirculated individual packs in both 1999 and 2000, in the 2000 annual proof sets and in silver proof and gold proof, in both 1999 and 2000. A special mintmark was added to coins in BU packs sold at the Millennium Dome.

The edge lettering is taken from William Shakespeare's The Tempest and recognises the dawn of the new millennium as an opportunity to look into the future.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was designed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, who is known for his portraits of Queen Elizabeth II. The coin features a unique fourth portrait of the Queen, which was created specifically for the Millennium series. The design is meant to represent the Queen's maturity and wisdom, and it is considered one of the most iconic and recognizable portraits of her reign.
