Triceratops is a genus of herbivorous ceratopsid dinosaur that first appeared during the late Maastrichtian stage of the late Cretaceous period, about 68 million years ago (mya) in what is now North America. The name Triceratops, which literally means "three-horned face". It is a very distinctive species owing to the three horns and the large bone frill.
