Surrounded by sunrays is Ukrainian folk hero Cossack Mamai under the trunk of an oak tree – a free spirit, defender, warrior, traveler, and a skilled rider – symbolizing Ukrainian mentality and the eternal defender of Ukraine; the Cossack has modern attributes – instead of a sabre there is a modern assault rifle on the oak tree; above the image of the Cossack is the following semicircular legend (lines from the anthem).

Ukraine’s state symbols reflect Ukraine’s history, reminding Ukrainians of the glory of their ancestors, and inspiring them to new feats and achievements. State symbols are an important attribute of a modern state, representing its sovereignty. For Ukraine, these are the Coat of Arms of Ukraine, the National Flag of Ukraine, and the National Anthem of Ukraine.

The National Anthem of Ukraine is a fragment of the song Ukraine is not yet Dead, written by Pavlo Chubynskyi and set to music by Mykhailo Verbytskyi. Over a century and a half, this musical and poetic emblem of Ukraine has become a symbol of its struggle for independence, which raises the fighting spirit and morale, and which has since become its national anthem.
