Walls of Avila: Universal symbol and most outstanding monument that welcomes and protects the city. It constitutes the best preserved medieval walled enclosure in Spain and, probably, in all of Europe, being declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1884. It is the best example of military architecture of Romanesque architecture in Spain and a unique model of European medieval architecture. Its layout is essential to understand a city of which was military defense, sanitary belt, fiscal frontier and support of other architectures. It has a perimeter of 2,516 meters, 2,500 battlements, 88 cubes or towers and 9 doors.
