Comment
Patrimonio Nacional is the denomination received in Spain by the public body, dependent on the Ministry of the Presidency, Relations with the Courts and Equality, dedicated to the care and maintenance of assets historically linked to the Crown of Spain. The Royal Monastery of Santa Clara is located in the village of Tordesillas (Valladolid) on the cornice of the Douro River. Originally, it was a Mudejar palace, called Pele de Benimerín, ordered to be built by King Alfonso XI around 1340 in commemoration of the Battle of the Salado. It served as residence to Leonor de Guzmán, favorite of Alfonso XI. Pedro I finished the works begun by his father and yielded it in 1363 to his daughters Beatriz and Isabel so that they turned it into a convent. When the convent was founded it was necessary to ask for permission from the diocese of Palencia, since the town belonged to that diocese from 1059 to 1595.
