Comment

The Cathedral-Mosque of Cordoba is the most important symbol of the city of Cordoba and one of the treasures of Andalusian art. The construction of the mosque began in the 8th century by 'Abd al-Rahman I on the remains of an ancient Christian basilica, being successively enlarged during the following two centuries. It became the second largest mosque in the world. In 1236, after the conquest of the city by Ferdinand III the Saint, the mosque was consecrated as a cathedral, although until the sixteenth century the construction of the temple inside the same building of the mosque was not started. This constructive solution converts the Cathedral-Mosque of Cordoba into a unique building in the world. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984.
