Comment

This Silver Proof coin features the morepork, also called the ruru or Tasmanian spotted owl, is a small brown owl found throughout New Zealand and Tasmania. Described by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1788, it was for many years considered to be the same species as the Australian boobook of mainland Australia until 1999.

The coin was issued individually in capsule in a plush case. (3,600 copies)

It was also included in the 7 coin Proof Year Set. (1,800 copies)

A Copper-nickel version of the coin was also released. (See link)

Interesting fact

The 1999 New Zealand $5 Silver Proof Coin featuring the 4th portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the Morepork (a type of owl) has a unique feature - it has a mirror-like finish on the reverse side, creating a beautiful reflective effect.
