This coin features the morepork, also called the ruru or Tasmanian spotted owl, is a small brown owl found throughout New Zealand and Tasmania. Described by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1788, it was for many years considered to be the same species as the Australian boobook of mainland Australia until 1999.

The coin was issued individually in a coincard. (1,900 copies)

Interesting fact

The 1999 New Zealand $5 coin featuring Elizabeth II (4th Portrait; Morepork) is unique in that it was the first coin to feature a nocturnal bird, the Morepork (also known as the New Zealand owlet-nightjar), on its reverse side. This design choice was meant to highlight the country's diverse wildlife and promote conservation efforts.
