Comment

This coin features the Saddleback bird which was once widespread in the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Towards the end of last century the species declined rapidly, surviving only on Hen Island, off the eastern coast of Northland, and a few islands off Stewart Island.

The coin was issued individually in a capsule in a plush case. (1,854 copies)

It was also included in the 7 coin Proof Year Set. (2,132 copies)

A Copper-nickel version of the coin was also released. (See link)
