Comment

This coin features the Saddleback bird which was once widespread in the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Towards the end of last century the species declined rapidly, surviving only on Hen Island, off the eastern coast of Northland, and a few islands off Stewart Island.

The coin was issued individually in coincard. (2,400 copies)

It was also included in the 7 coin Uncirculated Year Set. (4,150 copies)
Front and back of the slipcase.

A Sterling Silver proof version of the coin was also released. (See link)

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 1997 New Zealand 5 Dollar coin featuring Elizabeth II (3rd Portrait; Saddleback) is that it has a unique error. Some coins were minted with a misprinted date, showing "1997" instead of "1998". This error has increased the value of these coins among collectors.
