Towards the end of last century the species declined rapidly, surviving only on Hen Island, off the eastern coast of Northland, and a few islands off Stewart Island. The coin was issued individually in coincard. It was also included in the 7 coin Uncirculated Year Set. (4,150 copies)

Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1997 New Zealand 5 Dollar coin featuring Elizabeth II (3rd Portrait; Saddleback) is that it has a unique error. Some coins were minted with a misprinted date, showing "1997" instead of "1998". This error has increased the value of these coins among collectors.
