The US Coinage Act of 2 Apr. 1792 set the standard weight at 135 grains and the gold content at 123¾ grains, hence the fineness of .9167.
In 1829 the diameter was changed from 25 mm to 23.8 mm. All other standards remained the same. The design of John Reich was modified by William Kneass for the smaller diameter coins.

Interesting fact

The Capped Bust $5 gold coin, minted from 1813 to 1834, was the first US coin to feature a portrait of Lady Liberty with a cap on her head, hence its name.
