The free dance is both dazzling and colorful, energetic and fast-paced. One of the newest additions to competitive powwows, it's a crowd favorite. Dancers need to be agile and fit to perform the various choreographies - which can include twirling or even pirouetting - to the rhythm of the drums and chants. Free dance costumes are elaborate and unique, each element a highly personal expression of the dancer's lineage, heritage or background. The dancer usually wears color-coordinated feather tails (one behind the shoulders and one behind the hips) and bracelets, and sometimes aplastron of hair cylinders (made of bone) over his or her beaded dress. Bells may be attached to her moccasins, tinkling to the rhythm of her lively steps, while the waving feathers of her spiky headdress accentuate her physical presence. Following the beat of the drum, the pow-wow dancer makes calculated movements that touch us to the core. Intricate footwork and acrobatics entertain while telling a story; each symbolic gesture made within the circle is a heartbeat felt by all observers, witnessing a powerful expression of identity, spirituality and heritage.Did you know?
Free dance first appeared in Oklahoma, USA, in the early 20th century. Practiced as a form of entertainment, it gradually spread to other regions, so much so that today the category is one of the most popular at competitive powwows, where dancers are judged on both skill and costume.
The spiky headdress can be adorned with eagle feathers, like the decorative tails. If a feather falls, the dance is stopped, and a special ceremony is held to recover this sacred object.
Colors also have a special significance. Black is associated with death, the otherworld or night. Blue can represent a woman, the sky, sadness, thunder or lightning. Green is the color of earth, flora, summer and rain. Red is for blood, war, sunset or thunder. White refers to winter and snow, while yellow symbolizes sun and day.
