The Battle of Kursk - one of the largest battles of the Second World War. In a bid to regain initiative after the Stalingrad debacle, German troops on July 5, 1943, began Operation Citadel, a large-scale offensive in the direction of Orel-Kursk and Belgorod-Kursk. These plans were frustrated by a counteroffensive of the Soviet army, which routed 30 enemy divisions and in August liberated Orel, Belgorod and Kharkov. It is in the summer of 1943 that the largest tank battle of the Second World War was fought at Prokhorovka, in which 1,200 tanks were involved on both sides. The victory on the Kursk Bulge finally gave the Soviet army the strategic initiative which it held till the end of the war.

Interesting fact

The Kursk Bulge was a major turning point in World War II's Eastern Front, and the coin commemorates the Soviet Union's victory in that battle. The coin's design features an image of a soldier holding a flag, with the Kursk Bulge memorial in the background. The coin was minted in 1993, 50 years after the battle took place.
