Date of issue: 03 NOV 1993A large-scale Soviet offensive operation to liberate Kiev from Fascist invaders unfolded in the autumn of 1943 with the offensive of the 1st Ukrainian front armies, which took the city by storm on November 6. The capital of Ukraine was occupied by Germans for 776 days. The city lay in ruin. Before the war it had a population of nearly 1 million, but after the liberation there were only 183,000 residents left there.
