Date of issue: 28 MAR 2001The first national opera «Life for the Tsar» («Ivan Soussanin») was composed by M.I. Glinka, founder of the Russian classic opera, in 1836. The opera is based upon a legend about the heroic deed of a Kostroma peasant during the Polish invasion of 1612.
Interesting fact
The Bolshoi Theater coin was designed by Russian artist, V.A. Nikonov, and features an image of the historic Bolshoi Theater building in Moscow on one side, and the Russian coat of arms on the other. The coin was minted in 2001 to commemorate the theater's 225th anniversary.
