The three-cent pieces, called the trime by the Treasury Department, was first authorized by Congress on March 3, 1851. The weights of the silver three-cent pieces were specified as 12³∕₈ grains (.80 grams, KM #75) and 11¹³∕₂₅ grains (.75 grams, KM# 80 and KM# 88).Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1854-1858 United States 3 Cents coin (type 2 - two lines bordering star) is that it was designed by Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, James B. Longacre. Longacre's design features a depiction of a Native American princess on the obverse (front) side of the coin, and a wreath surrounding the denomination on the reverse (back) side. This design was unique for its time, as it was one of the first coins to feature a Native American image. Additionally, the use of a silver and copper alloy for the coin's composition was also unusual, as most coins of the time were made of pure silver or copper.
