The three-cent pieces, called the trime by the Treasury Department, was first authorized by Congress on March 3, 1851. The weights of the silver three-cent pieces were specified as 12³∕₈ grains (.80 grams, KM #75) and 11¹³∕₂₅ grains (.75 grams, KM# 80 and KM# 88).
