The creation of the State Bank of the Russian Empire stipulated by needs for the economic development of the country was the component part of the reorganization of the bank system of Russia. The history of the State Bank of Russia began on May 31 [June 12, New Style] 1860 when its Statute had been confirmed by the edict (ukase) of the Emperor Alexander II. According to the Statute the State Bank was created "for bringing life to trade operations and strengthening the monetary credit system". The legal successors of the State Bank of the Russian Empire, as an emission institute, were in the following the State Bank of the RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federate Socialist Republic), the State Bank of the USSR and since 1992 - the Central Bank of the Russian Federation.
