The Astrakhan Kremlin is the unique monument of the Russian ancient fortification art founded in the XVIth century as an advanced post on the south-east border of Russia. It was one of the firmest fortresses of ancient Russia and remains the outstanding architectural monument of the lower reaches of Volga-river. The architectural ensemble of the Astrakhan Kremlin includes the Assumption (built by Dorofey Myakishev) and the Trinity Cathedrals, the Bishop House with the Home Church, the Kyrill Chapel, the Nikolaus Gait Church, the Bell Tower of the Virgin Gate erected on place of the Gate Tower of the same name.
