Central motif is a beaver, stylized in the tradition of Canadian artist Andy (Na̱gedzi) Everson's K'ómoks and Kwakwaka'wakw ancestors. This image is framed by six maple leaves which, individually, represent autumn. Together, the six leaves form a winter snowflake. The negative spaces between the leaves are the raindrops of spring. Rays emanating from this central image represent the sunshine of summer.

The three elements of Canadian nature - land, sky and sea - together form a truly magnificent landscape. In a similar symbiosis, the people of this country, both First Nations and peoples of all backgrounds, live together in a unique experience within this environment, where their distinct cultures are united by a shared history and sense of nationhood.The Symbiosis series celebrates the relationship between the three elements of Canadian nature: land, sky and sea. This first piece, dedicated to the land, features a beaver and ingeniously integrates Canada's four seasons, framed by a garland of six maple leaves. The emblematic importance of the maple leaf to Canada is well known, but here it represents autumn in particular, the season when maple leaves are at their most colorful. Arranged on six points, the leaves become a snowflake. Six stylized drops of water, nestled between the leaves, represent spring. Finally, rays of sunlight emanating from the image symbolize summer. Like the seasons, each element of the motif integrates with the next, and the holographic treatment of the motif enhances this sense of symbiosis and transition.
Representing the pragmatic, hard-working Canadian people, the beaver is one of Canada's oldest symbols and a prominent figure in First Nations mythologies. This exceptional animal, which attracted the first fur traders to Canada's east coast, contributed greatly to the exploration and colonization of the country by Europeans.
It is very fitting that an artist from the traditionally protective nation of the "land of plenty" on eastern Vancouver Island should conceive a series celebrating the relationship between land, sea and sky, and the peoples living in this environment. Andy (Na̱gedzi) Everson is a member of the K'ómoks First Nation of British Columbia. Through dance, drumming and art, Everson honors the traditions of his K'ómoks and Kwakwaka'wakw ancestors. As a ceremonial dancer, he has traveled the world promoting First Nations traditions. It was these dances that inspired Everson to seriously explore art and design items for potlatches. Today, he's known for his bold, eye-catching and inspiring designs, which often fuse traditional motifs with references to popular culture.
