Comment

Under the name 'Numismatic Jewels', in 2008 a new series of collector coins begins in which unique pieces of Spanish numismatics will be reproduced, and which will continue over the next few years. This second edition minted in 2009 is dedicated to the Centén and the Cincuentín. The set is composed of three coins, each of which reproduces a coin of a denomination that was issued in 1609 in the reign of Felipe III.
The Segovian Centén is a Spanish gold coin that was equivalent to 100 Escudos, of which only seven pieces were manufactured; this Centén was minted in 1609, and is considered the largest gold coin in history minted in all of Europe and the most expensive in the world today (10/21/2009 800 000 euro, acquired by auction). It is believed that due to the exaggerated value of the currency in its time, it was only used as a symbol of recognition or public ostentation and to enhance or reward some characters of the Castilian nobility in the time of Felipe III.

Interesting fact

The 20 Euros (100 Escudos “Centén” of Philip III) 2009 gold coin from Spain has a unique feature - it has a rectangular shape, unlike most coins which are round.
