A gorgeous bird theme in Mother Nature's contrasting colors.Wearing its distinctive pointed crest, the cardinal brings a welcome splash of color to landscapes of all seasons with its bright red plumage. But its flamboyant appearance can also delight us on calm winter days, when most of nature's colors are hidden beneath a thick blanket of snow, as seen on this 99.99% pure silver piece with selective coloring.
Selective coloring
Selective coloring enhances one of winter's most vibrant landscapes. Thanks to a bright red cardinal and hardy plants that don't mind the cold, this piece is a true ode to Mother Nature's amazing mix of colors, just like the Blue Jay in 2021 and American Waxwing in 2022.
Immersive motif
The bird's-eye view gives us the impression of being perched in the same tree as the cardinal, among the conifers.
DID YOU KNOW?
Color is important: the crimson red plumage of male cardinals determines their mating success. Females are a soft mix of brown and grey.
Male cardinals are quite territorial: they sometimes mistake their own reflection for an intruder and spend several hours fighting against this imaginary threat!
The population of red cardinals in Canada is steadily increasing, and feeders have a lot to do with it (cardinals love sunflower seeds). This permanent resident used to live only in southeastern Canada, but has recently been spotted as far west as Manitoba and as far east as Newfoundland and Labrador.
"Walks on my property inspired the background of this motif. The sun and snow on the pine branches create a bright, pristine backdrop that brings out the striking black and red of the male cardinal. I always feel happier after seeing this bird!" - TONY BIANCO, ARTIST

Interesting fact
The Northern Cardinal coin, minted in 2023, is the first coin in the Royal Canadian Mint's "Birds of Canada" series to feature a species of bird that is not native to Canada. The Northern Cardinal is actually a resident of the eastern and central regions of North America, and its presence in Canada is limited to a few isolated populations in the southern provinces. Despite this, the coin's design, which features a beautiful rendering of the bird in its distinctive red plumage, has been praised for its accuracy and attention to detail.
